 Review Quotes:

"Agents of Change is action-packed and exciting. The plot escalates quickly and    keeps a good pace to the end of the book. The love story is complicated and emotional, not just lust-driven and superficial." — Julia Peterson

"I love the narrator's voice that comes across, I mean, really love it. Additionally, there were some really great moments where I felt the author did a good job of upping the stakes." — Nikki McCormack

An amiable corporate manager by day and a fledgling matchmaker whenever he can get around to it, Calvin Newsome’s new dream job falls into his lap when he’s recruited by a secret worldwide organization whose agents use uncanny abilities to empower and influence everyday downtrodden individuals. Disaster strikes, however, when an elaborate scheme leaves Calvin as a prime murder suspect…and his new employer is presumably to blame.

With the authorities on his heels and his life left in ruin, Calvin uses his new powers to blend in until a journey for freedom becomes a quest for peace. As the agency’s rival organization threatens the security of all of earth’s inhabitants, Calvin teams up with unlikely allies and battles startling enemies hellbent on unleashing their power in a twisted version of justice, innocent lives be damned.

Excerpt

Something didn't feel right.

Dark.

Dirt floor.

My left side ached, and I could barely swallow. I sat with my eyes closed and tried to recall what happened. The events from the previous night came crashing back into the present, and the fear of discovery threatened to overwhelm me again.

I peeked around the corner of the corrugated steel building. A lone goat munched on some dried grass near a split-rail fence. A few yards away a rooster pecked at the hard, dry earth. An older woman with salt and pepper colored hair and skin like a walnut scattered seed in front of him. She clutched a brown and white serape around her against the early morning chill.

Everything appeared calm, bucolic, even. I leaned back against the metal wall and took stock of my position.

Salazar ruled this little section of Sonora with an iron hand. The woman outside would not help me, for fear of payback. In fact, no one who knew him would be fool enough to assist Salazar's crazy American woman.
Especially when she took something that belonged to him. Something he valued above all else. And it wasn't only his pride, although that would be enough to get me killed.

I opened the canvas backpack next to me to make sure the contents were still safe, that I hadn't somehow lost it all in my mad rush to escape.
The cash was all there. I breathed a sigh of relief. It meant my survival. Without it, I would have nothing with which to bargain for my life, if it came to that. As it was, the stash wouldn't get me the immediate help I so desperately needed. It wasn't like I could call a cab in this part of Mexico, even if I had a phone.

If I knew Salazar, he'd already locked down the small airport a few miles away, and was probably trying to bribe aviation officials in Hermosillo, Oregon and even Puerto Peñasco, although each of the towns lay miles from his hacienda.

I needed to get to San Bruno, a small fishing village on the Sea of Cortez. Salazar didn't have much pull with the ex-pats who lived there. Besides, they'd help a fellow American.

Especially one with a boat load of dinero.

Interview with D.V. Berkom

What will readers like about your book?
Readers who love fast-paced, action-packed suspense with a strong heroine will like this book.

Why did you self publish?
I love the whole entrepreneurial aspect of self-publishing: being able to choose the format, book cover, getting to know readers, planning book launches, and yes, self-promotion. I've learned so much in the last few months about the e-pubbing industry and it's exciting! What a fantastic time to be a writer!

What is your writing process?
I work full-time, so carving out enough time to write is a challenge. I usually write on my lunch hour, at home in the evenings and at least one day on the weekend. I have a vague idea of what I want to achieve in terms of plot by the time I start the story, although many times the more I get to know the characters, the more the idea for the story changes. I love that part!

How long does it take you to write your first draft?
Depends on the length. Lately, I've been intrigued by novella length- it suits my lifestyle and attention span :-). It usually takes a few weeks to get the first draft finished, followed by a couple of weeks of editing, sending to beta readers, polishing, etc. All in all, about two months. As for novel length, it can take me anywhere from four months to a year, depending on research.

What inspired you to write this particular story?
The escalating drug cartel violence in Mexico. I lived in Mexico for a time and fell in love with the country and people. The idea that such a family-oriented culture had to deal with incredibly stressful circumstances in their daily lives gave me the kernel for the story. I also lived in Arizona off and on for years- it's very hard to live in the Phoenix metro area and not be affected by the polarization created by the whole illegal immigration issue. Let's just say I saw a lot of hypocrisy. Ultimately, though, I wanted to write an entertaining story and blow things up.

Rick Rivoire is flush with money, women, and prospects. He protects his country as one of the Rainguns, an elite regiment of spellcasting cavalry.

But national policy drifts ominously into slavery and religious persecution, sparking rebellion. Joining the rebels could land Rick on a prison ship, in slave-irons --- or atop the same gallows where he watched his father hang.

The alternative looks no brighter. The status quo imperils Rick’s hard-won self-respect. Supporting tyranny would doom his dream to emulate the valiant swordswoman who braved a den of monsters to rescue the lonely, terrified nine-year-old boy he once was.

Rick can’t stay above the fray forever. He must either defend a government whose actions disgust him --- or risk everything he has.

This story unfolds in a world of bloodthirsty pirates, brave musketeers, and vile monsters. Its target audience is anyone who has ever wrestled with questions of whether, and how, to risk opposing the actions of their country.

This book contains graphic violence and some explicit sex. It is intended for adults only.

Bio: I’m a New England attorney who needs to keep this separate professional identities separate.

Excerpt:

“Those two are cute together, old and in love,” said Danya. “You mustn’t tell them that, though. Shall we sit?”

“I’m sure you want to sit again after singing so powerfully. So how did Joaquim lose his eyes?”

“In Fedyrshchenkoff. He was tortured, for stealing. When he was in the army.”

Rick’s blood slowed. “That’s awful.”

“The awful part was losing his eyes. But you knew that.”

“When did this happen?”

“Many years ago. He sold the army’s korba on the black market. He’s lucky they didn’t execute him.”

“Execution might have been kinder.”

“He had only one Gift left, even then. Or at least he said he did. No doubt that helped convince them to spare his life.”

“How long did they have him?”

“Oh, many months. Over a year, maybe two. You can see from the way he shuffles, his hip was broken too. Twice, with a hammer.”

“Why do all that to a helpless old man?”

“He wasn’t so old and helpless then. They hoped he’d give up names of the buyers. But he didn’t know their names, so that was that. Eventually they believed him and sent him home.” Danya finished rolling something between papers, lit it on the table’s candle, and brought it to her mouth to inhale. “But they beat him very often. He had a bad time.”

“How did he get through it?”

“Why don’t you ask him.”

“I can’t do that. It might upset him.”

“And so what? He’s blind. He can’t hurt you.” She grinned archly. “If he tries to hit you, you can run away.”

Rick tried to sound firm, but not too serious. “I will not make an amiable old blind fellow who reminds me of my grandfather to re-live torture.”

“Oh why the hell not! He makes everyone else re-live it. Some days he won’t shut up about it.”

“So he talks of it often? How did he get through it?”

“Well, Joaquim says. . .” she tapped her hand holding the gasper, trying to shake off ash it didn’t have. “He imagined Samantha’s face. When someone tortures you? They control your thought, so there’s no escape. But some people escape, back to comforting memories, and stay there.”

“What do you mean, stay there?” Rick didn’t like having his brow knit in front of Danya, because it didn’t show him at his best. But he couldn’t help it now. “Do you mean, they stay there forever, lost forever? Don’t the torturers try to drag them out?”

Danya exhaled, her face resigned. “I’m sure they do.”

“Like a wolf, trying to get at a rabbit hidden in a hollow log. Only the rabbit can’t bolt out the other side, because it’s stuck now.”

Danya surveyed him. “You’ve thought about this a lot, haven’t you?”

Interview with John Blackport

What will readers like about your book?

I expect they’ll like the action scenes. I also hope they’ll like that half the royalties are going to the Scleroderma Research Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure. I’ve dedicated this book to my brother-in-law, and I want the book to help fight the disease that killed him.

Why did you self publish?

I was tired of having agents and editors tell me I should switch to paranormal romance because military fantasy won’t sell.

What is your writing process?

I start with a Grand Chronology of events stretching over months and years of time in the story. Then I decide what order the chapters go in, and write them. Then I do individual checks of the whole manuscript --- overusage of certain words, sentence structures, and so forth. By this point it has become clear exactly where the major surgery is required.

How long does it take you to write your first draft?

Centuries

What inspired you to write this particular story?

Short answer --- Bernard Cornwell and George Macdonald Fraser. Long answer --- I think Americans were polarized by the wars of the last ten years, and I wanted to make sense of how events like that can drive wedges through a person or a nation. The fantasy genre allows me to do that with a completely distinct fact pattern that won’t be confused with the real world.

The Jakarta Pandemic by Steven Konkoly

The Jakarta Pandemic

Amazon US Kindle

Author's websites:

In the late fall of 2013, a lethal pandemic virus emerges from the Islamic Republic of Indonesia and rages unchecked across every continent. When the Jakarta Flu threatens his picture perfect Maine neighborhood, Alex Fletcher, Iraq War veteran, is ready to do whatever it takes to keep his family safe. As a seasoned sales representative for Biosphere Pharmaceuticals, makers of a leading flu virus treatment, Alex understands what a deadly pandemic means for all of them. He particularly knows that strict isolation is the only guaranteed way to protect his family from the new disease.

With his family and home prepared for an extended period of seclusion, Alex has few real concerns about the growing pandemic. But as the deadliest pandemic in human history ravages northern New England, and starts to unravel the fabric of their Maine neighborhood, he starts to realize that the flu itself is the least of his problems. A mounting scarcity of food and critical supplies turns most of the neighbors against him, and Alex is forced to confront their unexpected hostility before it goes too far. Just when he thinks it can’t get any worse, the very face of human evil arrives on Durham Rd. and threatens to destroy them all. Alex and his few remaining friends band together to protect the neighborhood from a threat far deadlier than the flu, as they edge closer to the inevitable confrontation that will test the limits of their humanity.

Excerpt

He lowered his night vision scope for a moment and rubbed his eyes. Now, even the green image in the scope added to his discomfort. He just hoped that Charlie was keeping a better watch over the stretch of ground that defined the ambush site.

He’d better be, or they could stumble right through here undetected.

Alex had doubts about spotting them with his night vision scope. The near absence of ambient light, combined with a blinding snowstorm, continued to degrade the already grainy image formed by the inexpensive first generation night scope.

He twisted open the green ceramic thermos, and poured the last of the hot tea prepared for him by Kate. He sipped the steaming tea from the thermos cap, and placed the cap down next to the rifle in front of him and took another look through the night vision. He could still see the Hayes' house, but the image was even grainier. He knew the batteries were not the issue; he’d just changed them. Soon enough, he'd have to rely solely on Charlie to spot them in time to spring a coordinated ambush. If not, he'd have to take the three men down himself, which wasn't optimal, but was still well within his range of capabilities. He didn’t want to think about what could happen if they slipped by him. Nothing would stand between these psychopaths and his family.

As long as I see them before they're right on top of me I'll be fine.

Alex swigged the rest of the warm tea and replaced the lid. He tucked the thermos into his backpack and checked his rifle again. Looking through the Aimpoint scope, he saw that the red dot still glowed brightly in the center of the sight. He pulled back on the AR-15's charging handle, and ejected the bullet loaded in the chamber, leaving the brass cartridge in the snow where two other bullets lay. He’d ejected one bullet every half hour to ensure that the freezing temperatures had not affected the weapon's mechanical action. A malfunction tonight would spell disaster.

He suffered a sudden, violent, and insuppressible full body shiver, which rendered him useless for a few seconds. He couldn’t last out here all night, and he knew it. He looked through the night vision scope again, and the green image confirmed that he was still alone. Staring through the scope, he wondered how it was possible for things to have spiraled so far out of control.

So far gone, in fact, that he now found himself lying under a neighbor's play set in a blizzard, eagerly waiting to kill. He never thought twice about doing this in Iraq. It was his mission. He didn't really have any problem with it here either, and he could rationalize this act on several levels. He had to do it: for the good of the neighborhood, and probably society in general; but most importantly...for the immediate safety of his family.

And in the end, that was all that really counted for Alex.

About Steven Konkoly

Steven Konkoly graduated from the United States Naval Academy and served on active duty for eight years with various Navy and Marine Corps units. He currently lives with his family in southern Maine, where he works for a major pharmaceutical company.

The Jakarta Pandemic is my first of many novels. When I’m not busy with a full-time job, running a family, trying to stay in reasonable shape for a forty-year old ex-military type, and sailing (and the upkeep of a boat)…I lock myself into my office and work on the next one.

Interview with Steven Konkoly

What will readers like about your book?

The Jakarta Pandemic is a realistic story that thrusts the reader into the shoes of Alex Fletcher, a humorous, easy going father on the eve of an apocalyptic pandemic disaster. Readers become quickly attached to Alex and his family, as they fight through one challenge worse than the next as the Jakarta Flu tears through their town, stripping away the tenuous bonds between friends, family and neighbors. The Jakarta Pandemic is the ultimate “what would I do in this situation” story, because the premise is thoroughly realistic, and the action surrounding each crisis is compelling and thought provoking.

Why did you self publish?

I initially self-published to make the book available to family and friends. It developed a solid niche following, which quickly and unexpectedly expanded. By the time I had settled down to seriously dig into the query process, I had to ask myself. Why? I chose to pour my time and efforts into writing a new book, and improving The Jakarta Pandemic based on reader feedback. Oh, and a little marketing here and there…actually, quite a lot.

What is your writing process?

I start writing a scene, then maybe another. The scenes may not be connected, but they help me to develop the protagonists personality and back story. For both novels, I started with a Prologue that showed the protagonist earlier in life, in a significant, character shaping event. I’m typically a highly organized person, so this process will eventually start to bother me, and I will sit down and draw a plot line flow chart or story outline. I will also start notebook with character names, chronological details, and other important aspects to remember. I use Post Its for new ideas, or additions to written scenes, and post them on my desk. I attempt to “eliminate” these, in between solid stretches of writing, by going back into the story and making the recommended changes.

How long does it take you to write your first draft?

My first book took three years. I stopped and started, with no set schedule. I loved the finished product so much, that I have buckled down and now religiously write about a thousand words per day. I should finish the first draft of Black Flagged by September…October at the latest. So, I went from 3 years to 6 months, hopefully. There are few things as satisfying or exciting as the feel of your story, physically in your hand.

The Ghost Of A Flea by John Brinling

Roger landed on Strickland’s back as he tried to flee, forcing him to the ground. The attaché case skittered away as the two men wrestled for control of each other, rolling over and over at the curb's edge, crashing finally into a hot dog vendor's cart, upending it. The owner screamed invectives, dancing to escape the thrashing bodies.

Strickland was on top now, Roger's head between his hands, trying to smash it down on the curb stone. Roger got a knee against Strickland's stomach and drove him back. Half-crazed with fear and anger, Roger relentlessly pursued his attacker, pinning him to the sidewalk with a knee on each arm, smashing his fist into the gaunt face. Once. Twice. Then he was hit from behind, hit hard on the left side of his head. Vaguely he saw the sidewalk rushing up to meet him as darkness enveloped him.
