Marked: Soul Guardians Book 1 (Volume 1) by Kim Richardson

When sixteen year-old Kara Nightingale gets hit by a bus and dies suddenly, she’s reborn in a strange new world with a new career—as a guardian angel.

Marked is the story of Kara Nightingale, a headstrong girl who desperately wants to have a normal life—away from her mother’s creepy visions. If dying wasn’t bad enough, she is shuffled into a new world as a rookie for the Guardian Angel Legion. Soon Kara is sent out on assignments to save the souls of those about to die before they are claimed by demons. Under the direction of her Petty Officer David, she must carry out a Life-Quest; a mission that could grant her old life back. Kara is charged with saving an Elemental child, born of angel and human parents, held captive by the army of demons. Only Kara can save the Legion and sets out on her Life-Quest, deep in the demon infested mortal world in search of the kidnapped child.

Bio:
I grew up in a small town in Northern Quebec, Canada, where I developed a wild imagination because—let’s face it—there was nothing else to do. I surrounded myself with art/books/animation and fell in love with fantasy novels and movies like, Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal. I loved to be transported to other worlds.
Years later, I left my little “hick town” and moved to the city of Montreal, where I studied 3D Animation. I became an Animation Supervisor for a VFX company, and stayed in the field of animation for 14 years.
Now, I’m a full-time writer, enjoying the country life with my husband and two Bernese Mountain dogs, Simba and Maggie. My children. I write stories geared towards children because, let's not tell lies, I'm still a 13 year-old at heart!

What will readers like about your book?
It’s original, imaginative, quirky...lots of action and adventure with a hint of romance.

Why did you self publish?
The publishers/agents that rejected my book, all said the same thing: they loved it, but it didn’t “fit” their list at the moment. What the heck does that mean? Who decides what this list is? Why can’t readers decide what books they want to read? The control aspect of the self-publishing world attracted me. As an artist, I did my own cover, decided how I wanted the inside to look like and I chose the price. I didn't have a whole team of people telling me what I could and couldn't do. And that was loads of fun!

What is your writing process?
I always do an outline first. I usually have all the main points in each chapter figured out before I write up the first draft. Once I had a second draft done, I contacted a reputable editor – and we polished the manuscript together for about a year.

How long does it take you to write your first draft?
Marked took about 4 months, maybe a bit more.

What inspired you to write this particular story?
I was always interested in the afterlife. What happens after we die? Do angels really exist? I drove home from work on day and looked up into the sky – and the idea of having a girl die and became a guardian angel popped into my head. I thought it was funny, and really original. So when I got home I started to jot down some ideas.
