Bio:
My name is Jared Gullage. I have been a writer ever since I can remember. My father always encouraged me to paint pictures with words when I was younger, and he was one of my biggest influences in learning to read and write, along with my mother who actually taught me letters. Ever since I could do it, I have been imagining worlds, and throughout my life I introduced friends to those worlds through playing outside, through role-playing (D&D type stuff) and through story-telling. I am currently an English teacher in the United States, but have always been, and will always be, a creator of worlds and a novelist.

What will readers like about your book?
I feel like this book introduces them to a real character, not a golden child, not a know-it-all, not an Einstein, but a real, tangible, character, a person with flaws, a person who doesn't understand and completely translate the world around him. Yes, it is a fantasy book, but it is also the story of a person who made a mistake, and who lives with his mistakes. It's the story of a father who loves his family, even though the world is unfair sometimes. He strives to keep in his heart what's important and what matters to him, and in the end, these things are the most important.

Why did you self publish?
I wanted to self-publish for a lot of reasons. One, I was growing tired of the standard publishing route being the only way to get my stories out there. Some of my stories will not fit the standardized published route. Furthermore, I wanted to prove to myself I could learn to do it. Lastly, I don't want to have to share with a publisher what I can do for myself.

What is your writing process?
I usually have a central idea (a sort of happening) that I want to write about. I start with the end, I think, and work out all the little paths that lead up to that end. I want a story about X, so how do I get to X, how do I set X up.

How long does it take you to write your first draft?
Depends on the story. Some stories have taken forever (like a year or two). Other stories, and this one in particular, did not take long to draft out. I felt inspired, so I wrote this one in about a week or two. It depends on how much time the Lord gives me to work on what I want to work on, too. This story, I happened to have a lot of time in a big chunk to dedicate to it.

What inspired you to write this particular story?
It was almost a dare. A publisher said they didn't want to see some things, because they said it wasn't viable, so I tried to do it anyway, just to see if they were right. I don't think they were. I believe stream-of-consciousness is not dead, and I believe people do still like first person perspective. I was also inspired by such works as The Road by Cormac McCarthy and things like that book, where the only thing the main character has to offer his son is love and devotion. I want that in my life, and I want to experiment with what that looks like.

  1. I'm going to promote my cover artist here, too. His name is James McDonald, and he's great to work with. Extremely efficient, flexible, and reasonably priced I'd say.
